What makes you excited about coming into work every day?
The People. The feeling of knowing you are valued and having that communicated to you from the President on down is just not found everywhere. FHU was founded on the idea that culture eats strategy for breakfast, and the culture it has built is something I have come to love a great deal!

How does your work make a difference in the community?
Planners/Designers conceptualize ideas and put them on a “piece of paper.” Sometimes those ideas are not practical in the real world. My contributions to society and added value are finding the most efficient, economical, and practical way to implement concepts into the field, often using next generation solutions for the most accurate implementation.

How has FHU impacted your career?
Leadership at FHU has done an incredible job of selflessly introducing me to other colleagues in the industry and building me up to them. So many folks in the industry selfishly hide their relationships for personal benefit. But not at FHU. We are all one team, and we truly live it, not just preach it.

In your experience, what sets FHU apart from other firms?
It is widely known in the industry that to advance in your career you have to move from consultant to consultant. That is not the case at FHU. More so than any firm I have worked for, FHU promotes from within better than any. Even if there isn’t a clear path for career advancement, upon interest from an employee, FHU will try it’s hardest to create a path for advancement even if one currently doesn’t exist.

Why did you choose FHU?
In working with people at FHU prior to coming over, I could tell there was a commitment to seeing employees succeed. So often at other firms, especially in Construction Management, you get left on an island and can become ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ This is not the case at FHU. There is a daily commitment to ensure no one gets left behind and that everyone has the resources to be successful.

What makes you excited about coming into work every day?
I’m excited to come work with fun and brilliant people that I get to collaborate with to solve transportation challenges and work to deliver efficient, quality projects.

How does your work make a difference in the community?
My work helps maintain a safe and efficient transportation network. I get to design transportation structures that I use in my commute every day and help provide safe and smooth access to communities I know and live in.

What ways has FHU impacted your career?
FHU has given me more opportunities for growth and leadership than I ever could have imagined. From day one I was challenged to stretch my abilities into new roles, given the trust to grow into those roles, while also feeling supported by FHU leaders that provided guidance and direction whenever I asked. The interesting and challenging projects that FHU consistently wins gave me broad opportunities to strengthen my technical engineering skills as well as learn task and project management skills. This breadth of opportunity also gave me the space to determine what skills I was interested in pursuing and developing, so I could mold my career to what best fit my skills and the company’s needs.

In your experience, what sets FHU apart from other firms?
FHU makes me feel valued as a whole person, rather than just potential capacity or revenue potential. I have always felt that I had a voice that would be heard and the potential to impact the direction of the firm. FHU is always striving to grow and adapt to the changing industry and values the voices of all the staff as a way to guide our future.

What drew you to FHU?
I was drawn to FHU for its strong reputation for providing quality transportation work in the region with a long-term plan to maintain that legacy. I was looking for a place where I could have an impact on communities and projects of all sizes and also a place that would not be sold to a mega-firm within months or years of me joining. I wanted to be a part of FHU’s vision to provide transportation engineering long into the future and was drawn to the potential opportunities that come from this long-term vision.

What makes you excited about coming into work every day?
I get excited about coming in to work for several reasons. We have a great leadership team that is enthusiastic about growth and success of the organization. We also work on some of the coolest projects in the business. Lastly, the people I work with on a daily basis are great. Everyone supports one another and we all work as a very cohesive team, complimenting each other’s skills, and learning from each other.

How does your work make a difference in the community?
I take great pride in my work because it directly contributes to the betterment of our community. FHU’s work on improving transportation infrastructure allows for better connectivity of communities, and our work as the Water Resources group provides protection from flooding but also helps prevent pollution of our natural streams.

What ways has FHU impacted your career?
FHU has allowed me to take the next big step in my career. FHU allows people to grow at their own pace, while doing what they can to foster that growth.

In your experience, what sets FHU apart from other firms?
This company feels much more like a family than my last firm. The culture here is one where people don’t need to be afraid to speak up, and one that lets people know that they will be heard when they do speak up. Leadership cares about every employee’s opinion, not just leadership’s. FHU also does a great job of implementing fun (FHUN!) into the work environment, and that’s great to see. They not only allow fun activities, they push for us to make sure we are doing those things.

What drew you to FHU?
The first thing that drew me to FHU was the growth opportunity. The position that was open was a perfect steppingstone in my career, and I was drawn to that. Second was the reputation of FHU. Everyone I talk to in the industry trusts FHU to not only deliver on projects but deliver quality work. Lastly, once I had applied for the position and got to meet the people on my team and within the company, I knew this would be a great fit. I could immediately see how great the culture was here from the few conversations I had with people.

What makes you excited about coming into work every day?
Knowing that I am providing a service that will ultimately impact our direct community in a positive way. There’s nothing more exciting than driving around your town and being able to point or identify an improvement that you are responsible for delivering.

How does your work make a difference in the community?
It’s exciting our work reaches so many aspects of society by providing safe improvements in our community. Our work:

  • Helps users navigate their community more easily
  • Provides capacity on congested roads where it is most needed.
  • Improves supply chain distribution by providing safe rail crossings and improved roadway networks for our trucks and trains
  • Aims to improve impacts on our environment by mitigating disturbances or reducing emissions with trails, bike lanes and protected bike lanes, electric vehicle planning, transit improvements, the list goes on!

Above else, FHU is always looking to improve our product by researching and understanding the latest policies and implementing best practices.

What ways has FHU impacted your career?
FHU has provided many opportunities to advance my career from both professional and technical trainings, to attending networking and technical conferences, and working on unique projects. If there is an opportunity I’m interested in, FHU is there to help make that dream a reality.

In your experience, what sets FHU apart from other firms?
Each person is encouraged to identify what makes them excited about work and the company supports individuals in their career growth. Our Managers and Principals are always there to offer guidance but also allow each of us to take ownership in our work and growing our internal or external connections. However, the culture is what really sets FHU aside from my previous firm. FHU strives to maintain a team of employees who don’t show up to work “just to work” and never speak to others. We spend 40 hours each week with our coworkers so why not enjoy each other’s company!

What drew you to FHU?
The smaller company environment with a big impact in my local community was the biggest factor in coming to FHU. My previous job worked in other states and I never felt connected to my projects, clients, or team members. It’s exciting to see how your job directly impacts your community.

What makes you excited about coming into work every day?
Being able to tackle some very interesting transit planning projects and working on new rail transit projects that will grow the company. The variety and meaningfulness of projects gets me excited every day. I also enjoy the people that I work with, from FHU colleagues, to clients, to our consultant teaming partners.

How does your work make a difference in the community?
At the core, I really enjoy knowing that I am ultimately helping people improve their mobility choices while also creating great communities where people want to be.

What ways has FHU impacted your career?
Although I have only been here a short time, I have enjoyed the ability to work on a diversity of transportation planning projects and jump in to lead some of these projects while also developing new project pursuits.

In your experience, what sets FHU apart from other firms?
Because of the small size of FHU, I appreciate the closeness and interaction with my FHU colleagues and I also enjoy the regional focus that we have.

Why did you choose FHU?
I have known and worked with FHU over the years, largely as a client, so I knew that FHU is very well respected in the transportation industry, especially in regard to transit planning. Having also known a few of the employees over my professional career, I knew it is a great atmosphere to work and thrive. So when the opportunity opened up, it was an easy choice.

FHU is hiring for a variety of positions that can be found on our Careers page. We have entry- to senior-level positions open, as well as internships. Our clients’ projects require a blend of technical skills, creativity, and common sense, and we seek talented individuals with these characteristics, prepared to contribute their energy and intellect to a stimulating and collaborative work environment.
